October is already over?! When did that happen??!! So we had a pretty sweet week. Monday was a pretty cool p-day. We just chilled, and the other guys taught me how to play some game called "Settlers of Catan" which is actually really fun, and slightly addicting. Wednesday was a trade-off with OP 2nd ward. Elder Brown went up to be with Elder Wolfley (our DL) and Elder Black came down with me. Black came out the same time as Brown, and he's Navajo! It just so happened that that day we were finishing up tracting a street named 'Navajo'! This new batch of missionaries is so good!!! I can't even imagine how these guys are going to be in 2 years. Thursday we had interviews with President Newman. He discussed a new door approach that was introduced in the past few weeks. We call it "Gathering Through the Grove". Imagine this:
We knock on a door, man opens it. "Hi sir, how's it going?" "Good" "Awesome... we're representatives of Jesus Christ... my name is Elder Borgia and this is Elder Brown... what's your name?" "David" "Well, David, did you know that in the spring of 1820 God the Father and our Savior Jesus Christ appeared to a young boy in upstate New York?"
(at this point, we get one of 3 things: a door slammed, a blank stare, or a invitation to continue)
"David, this wasn't the first time that Christ had appeared in the America's. He also appeared anciently to the Native Americans. We have a record of His teachings among them! May we come in and share more of this message with you?"
So, definitely a lot more bold & direct. It's definitely inspired. It has been helping us find people that are truly interested rather than those that are simply listening to be polite. We're already leading the South in finding new investigators, and I can't wait to see what this does. Anyhoo... so the rest of my interview was good.
Saturday was our ward Halloween party. Elder Brown & I dressed up as each other. We wore the same tie, same pen, switched nametags, parted our hair the same, and both wore our glasses which look exactly the same (that's pretty much the wildest us missionaries can get!) Sadly, I forgot to take a picture. Oh well, maybe we'll do it again sometime. It was funny/interesting to see which members actually know our names, and which ones called me "Elder Brown" for the night. It was a ward soup/chili cookoff, and we ate so much!
Then once everyone had left, we had fun playing with the sound system. Bro. Sanders was there too, and we sang hymns (& other songs) for about an hour, which is where we got an idea! Starting next week, we're going to have hymn sing nights where we get together at the church and have members bring their friends. We'll just stand around the piano and sing, then once the Spirit is there we'll share a message. Sa-WEET!!!
When we got home from the party all of our neighbors were out watching the Ohio/Penn State game and grilling. We stayed out and talked for a little bit. Tom (right next door) made elk chili and had us try some. It was good! Now, prepare yourself... I tried something pretty funky. Tom suggested that I make a peanut butter sandwich and dip it in the chili. I thought he was crazy, but I did it anyway, and it was SO GOOD!!! So everyone, you totally have to try it!
So, along with all of this fun stuff, we also had a great time teaching this week. The Lord has been preparing the way for our investigators. I won't go into details because it's their personal lives, but it is very apparent that the Lord is quite involved in this work. We've found a few people this week that were definitely prepared to receive the gospel. I love y'all a lot! -Elder Borgia
